Smart Bro Pocket WiFi

For more than 2 years, we have PLDT DSL giving us fast and reliable internet connection. In addition, I got my Sun Broadband last year so I'm still connected even I'm not at home and I have my laptop with me. The latter's contract will end on November 3 so I decided to request for termination and apply for a Pocket WiFi. The options are Globe and Smart. Sun is not included because I just got a new plan under their SUNdroid rush promo. Since last week, I have searched for reviews of subscribers of both service providers. Knowing Smart and its service, I decided to visit their Festival Mall center and I got my Pocket WiFi.

I availed of their Plan 599 where I need to pay P800 (one-time) for the pocket WiFi device. So in total, advance payment is P1,399 (P800 for the device and P599 for the first month). At first I'm hesitant that this is the plan that I want because of only 50 hrs inclusion. When you exceed, you will be charged 10/30mins. And after reaching P999, it will be unlimited. So I can safely say that my plan is P999. With advertised 7.2Mbps working with 4G network (depends on the area). Our residence and office is situated near HSPA cellsites so I guess I won't have any connection problems.

 The box.

Sort of unboxing post. :) As stated, you can connect up to 5 gadgets. So I can connect my laptop, android phone, android tablet. And speed up to 7.2Mbps. When I tried speedtest in Festival, it reached 1.32Mbps. At home, 2.15Mbps is the best (so far).

The screen shows the signal strength, Network (4G, 3G, H), WiFi and how many devices are connected, Internet connection status, SMS, Battery.

My old Sun Broadband and my new Smart Bro Pocket WiFi.

Conclusion:
If like me, you're not a heavy user and not a fan of online games, where a Facebook status, the usual Like and share button is what we do, posting tweets on Twitter and other social networking activities, sending E-mails and some IM, then I recommend Smart Pocket WiFi for you. It is faster as compared to our PLDT DSL, handy and you can bring wherever you go. For 599-999/month, it is one, if not the best, plan we can have.

Best result so far. ;)

  1. We recently purchased one of these...and now it is having trouble already. It will not charge at all sometimes when plugged into the computer...and sometimes it charges, but only half way. We live near Antipolo and the speed is always less than 100kbps.

    1. Hi Sir. Thank you for spending time with my post. A few days after my purchase I also experienced the same problem regarding charging of pocket WiFi. I visit Smart center at Festival Mall. They plugged the device to their laptop and it charged so they advise me to go back when I still experience the same problem. So far the device is okay and charging. When did you purchased it? I think they allow change of defective device 7 days only after purchase. I suggest you visit the nearest Smart center for them to check it Sir. Thank you :)

  2. Hi,

How long did it take for you to get the pocket wifi?

I'm also curious if the signal's still strong in Las Pinas. I'm from Las Pinas too.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi. My application was approved same day that I visit Smart Center. I'm from Alabang. I think the signal depends also on what time you're using the broadband. During peak hours, average speed would be 1.5mbps. Best speed I got so far is 5.2mbps (Before 6AM). Thanks!

  6. Hi! I recently bought my Smart Bro Pocket Wifi (prepaid) and so far I'm not having any problems with the connection. But there is one thing that bothers me. How can I have the pocket wifi connect to my gadgets manually? I noticed that every time I boot the pocket wifi on, my gadgets (which I used to connect the wifi with) automatically detect the signal and then connects. My wifi is password enabled and when my gadget is automatically connected to the wifi, it no longer asks for the password. Is there any way for me to adjust the settings and have it connected manually where I can click on the wifi and enter the password on my gadget?

Another thing, can you suggest a more budget-friendly prepaid unli for pocket wifi? So far, I've used Always On 299 and I consumed it in less than 2 weeks. I'm curious whether if I use the unlimited surfing for 1-5 days, will it give me the same performance with Always On? If the unli plans won't hinder the wifi connection speed, I would theorize that I would get the same speed on whatever unli plan I choose. Which is more flexible and better? Thanks for the response.

    1. Hi. You have to change the WiFi settings of your gadgets so that it will not automatically connect to your Pocket WiFi especially that you're using a prepaid connection. Even if your WiFi has a password, once you connect to it, it will "remember" the settings/connection and will not ask for the password again. I'm not sure if there's other option but you may opt to click the "forget" button to delete the previous WiFi settings.

With regard to the more budget-friendly prepaid unli connection, I guess it really depends on the usage. I don't have an idea about the prepaid promos because this is my 1st time to use Smart internet and I am on postpaid. I think I'll go with unlimited if I can maximize it. If you're using the Always On 299 for just 2 weeks (at most) that's almost P600/mo so you might as well avail the unlimited promo.

      Delete
  7. oh my! So it's my gadgets that would have to adjust on the pocket wifi's connectivity? It's really irritating to open your pocket wifi and have 3 gadgets automatically connect to it because you previously used that gadget to connect to your pocket wifi and you're not even going to use all 3 of them! I guess it's one of the pocket wifi's flaws.

Actually, i have never tried using the unlimited 1-5 day surifing on the pocket wifi and I'm really curious whether will it have a difference with Always On, speed-wise. Anyways, there's no harm trying, right? Thanks so much. xoxo

  8. I have the SMART Starter Kit, the Plug-It Broadband of Smart. I tried using it in Cupang, Muntinlupa, but, weak signal. So, i am planning now to apply for pocket wi-fi of SUN Cellular, maybe because, i experienced already a poor signal using SMART Broadband in our area. so, what do you think? is there differences? from plug-it broadband to pocket wi-fi?.. :) Thank you.

    1. Before, I have the Plug-it broadband of Sun Cellular and I was not satisfied with the connection. I can't even play videos in YouTube! because it takes a long buffering time. When my locked-in period ended, I decided not to continue my line with them. I decided to switch to Smart because I know it has the strongest signal among the 3 providers. If you're going to avail the pocket WiFi of Sun Cellular, I'm not sure if they can give you faster connection. The signal really depends on the area. The advantage of having a pocket WiFi, you can bring it wherever you go as long as the device is fully-charged :) If you have neighbors who are currently using Sun internet connection, you may opt to ask them first just to be sure :)

  12. hi,
I am an OFW from Kuwait, I let my family in the Phil. purchased Smart Bro Wifi almost a month now but we we're disappointed because we can't use it on their location (New Cabalan, Olongapo City). They need to go somewhere else where there were no trees around like bringing it to my mom's place of work in SBMA. The most disappointing & saddest thing is that I'm going to pay for it in 24 months without the satisfaction of using it. What is the best thing to do? Can we just return it or disconnect it? Pls. help as it is just a waste of money :(

    1. Hi. Sad to know about that. Any internet providers (Smart, Globe or Sun), connection still depends on the area. If you really cannot use the Smart Pocket WiFi, you can report it to them at least for them to be aware of the problem. You may opt to change your internet provider but make sure to ask for the experience of people near your area for you to have an idea on what provider has a signal. You may try using prepaid first just to be sure. Regarding pre-termination of Smart, I already inquire to them about it but you need to settle monthly plan x remaining months. So technically, you will still pay the service for the full contract.

If your running balance is already 599 then you already consumed the 50hrs included in the plan. Any usage after that will be charged on top of your plan.

To all who are having problems on "CHARGING" the pocket wifi, The pocket WiFi has a Heat sensor on its battery, if it detects the Pocket Wifi's battery too hot, it will not charge, it will reroute its power directly to the plugged charger, so if your going to CHARGE it, make sure to cool the device first and if it detects that it is now below its maximum battery temp, it will Automatically Charge on its own...

  37. I'm not much of a techie here but I've been having a hard time getting a high-speed connection these past few weeks. Everytime the pocket wifi says it's in a 3G mode, the connection is fine. But suddenly it suddenly changes to "H" (I don't know what that means) and the connection is slower than a snail movement (which gets me on my nerves). I had no problems with the connection using my pocket wifi before, but weeks ago until now, the connection has been terrible. I tried calling *888 and the rep doesn't seem to know how to resolve this issue, which to me is very unhelpful.

  44. HI Edlyn, first lemme say I'm so amazed on how you respond to everybody who post on this site, kudos to o you and you should be noticed by smart (either you work for them or not).

I want to give this Pocket WiFi a shot if this would work well. If I may ask, have you experience intermittent connection with it? Like lose the connection X is the no. of times a day? Also, your answer to this questions may help the others:

    - How long is the battery time? (considering having multiple devices connected at once)
    - What is the typical downtime? (like peak hours of sluggish surfing)
    - For the past typhoons we've had (i.e. Labuyo), did you have issues with it?
    - Of course in this matter, distance and area from server is essential, But what is the worse speed/experience that you've had with it?
    - The Hardware seems to be though, is there a chance you've dropped 'em and cause physical damage in an instant? Can you rate its toughness?
    - For the rest of the folks, yea battery does got warm specially if you put it in a case or bag. But in your case, did you have it as warm as a cup of coffee? or a kettle itself? :)
    - They advertise it that you could have unlimited surfing with it. Is it me or it is vaguely discussed that the "unlimited" that they mean would be Data (no. of data gigabyte we could use) of surfing (the time you use your internet)? It is misleading since they defer the payment/subscription thru times (unit of time).

These may give us knowledge how reliable it is as some of us are curious about the satisfaction we could get. Your answer would help me get it as soon as you reply.

    1. Hi! Just like other network, my experience with Smart also has its flaws. I sometimes have a less than 1mbps connection.

Question: How long is the battery time? (considering having multiple devices connected at once)
Answer: My device lasts for 4-5 hours with 3-4 gadgets connected to it

Q: What is the typical downtime? (like peak hours of sluggish surfing)
A: I usually experience having a slow connection in the morning around 10AM-1PM.

Q: For the past typhoons we've had (i.e. Labuyo), did you have issues with it?
A: I did not experience any connection problem even during Typhoon Maring. However, the fastest connection I established is only 1.5mpbs which is same with our DSL connection.

Q: Of course in this matter, distance and area from server is essential, But what is the worse speed/experience that you've had with it?
A: Less than 1mbps (Using Speedtest App)

Q: The Hardware seems to be though, is there a chance you've dropped 'em and cause physical damage in an instant? Can you rate its toughness?
A: I think I already dropped my device twice but it is still working. Just be careful when you already have it :)

Q: For the rest of the folks, yea battery does got warm specially if you put it in a case or bag. But in your case, did you have it as warm as a cup of coffee? or a kettle itself? :)
A: No. It's just the same with mobile phones when you're using a mobile internet.

Q: They advertise it that you could have unlimited surfing with it. Is it me or it is vaguely discussed that the "unlimited" that they mean would be Data (no. of data gigabyte we could use) of surfing (the time you use your internet)? It is misleading since they defer the payment/subscription thru times (unit of time).
A: As stated in their website, Unlimited hours. I'm not really sure if there's any difference between Unlimited hours and Unlimited data.

Hope my answer help you and other readers :) Also, I'm not from Smart :) In fact, I am a subscriber of the 3 networks (Smart, Globe & Sun). Thanks :)

  45. Hello. I've been wanting to ask this to those who have used this device.

Would it be alright to have the device plugged on to the power supply/charger 24/7? So in effect, I will just use the battery when I'm outside the house. Would this setup cause battery damage, or alright since if it's plugged, the power used by the device should come from the charger and don't care about the battery's, right?

Im planning to buy the smart pocket wifi but not directly to smart store because its much cheaper if i buy it to other shops .. anyways i want to use their LTE sims as they've advertised that the maximum speed that you can get is 42 mbps (i know that the pocket wifi can only reach the max up to 7.2 mbps) so is it safe to say that the connection, aside from the area will also depends on the sim that you use? Thanks and God bless :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ok lang.. But I think mas madaling maubos ang life ng battery mo if you are using it while charging.. Battery's life cyle is counted based on charge cycle. It means kung naka-charge cya habang ginagamit mo, multiple life cycles ang na-coconsume. Unlike kapag nag-full charge ka then ginamit mo, equivalent to one charge cycle lang yun...

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yes totoong maubos but if you unplug your charger parang humihina cya, i was observing it many times while im using it maybe battery life cant boost the speed unlike the AC power na naka plug yung Pocket Wifi mo parang makadagdag Boost na rin yun.
